Key differences between Bobby Bright and Martha Roby: Party identification. Any differences they may have on the issues seem to be of detail and emphasis. Bright emphasizes conservation more than Roby, for instance. Both are conservative, as would befit a district that has trended heavily Republican in recent decades.
Bright does currently have a large fund-raising advantage over Roby. According to OpenSecrets.org, as of late July, Bright has raised $1.1 million to Roby's $569,000. They've both spent roughly $400,000, but Bright has $734,000 cash on hand to Roby's $122,000 (Yahoo News).

Bobby Bright: He is a Democrat that serves Alabama’s Second Congressional District. He believes the value of the dollar and worked his way up the ladder of success. First he put himself through college by being a sheet metal worker, ditch digger, roofer, and hotel porter. He then getting out of his graduation he taught school as well as a corrections officer for the Alabama prison system. Now as a United States Congressman wants to put into affect “fiscal discipline while making practical and thoughtful provisions for the future” (bright for congress). Bright is all for balancing the budget and making right choices for and to preserve the cities”AA” bond rating. “Bobby is an advocate of mandatory pay-as-you-go legislation that requires lawmakers to budget the same way Alabama families do - tightening their belts when resources are limited. Further, he has opposes any legislation that expands the scope of the federal government or imposes new taxes on families in southeast Alabama and across the country” (bright for congress). He wants the best for the people and will do what ever it takes to get there.
Bobby Bright
Key Issues: Bright is running as a conservative against the health care reform bill passed in Congress. According to his campaign website, he's pro-veteran, pro-defense, anti-spending, pro-gun rights and supports pro-growth economic policies. Bright also wants to extend the Bush tax cuts. He supports conservation and agricultural subsidies, the latter of which is directed toward the 2nd's farming constituency. Bright may be vulnerable on the immigration issue for his initial opposition to the Arizona anti-immigration law. When assured that Arizona residents would be asked about their immigration status during a legitimate police stop, Bright swung his support to the Arizona law (yahoo news).
Endorsements: According to his campaign's Facebook page, Bright has been endorsed by the United States Chamber of Commerce and the Alabama Farmers Federation PAC (Yahoo News).
Chances of maintaining his seat: Bright was a popular mayor of Montgomery and is a conservative as one can be while still remaining a Democrat. However in 2010, when politicians with a D by their names are vulnerable, Bright may have trouble holding on to this seat in this heavily Republican district. Bright is emphasizing his "non partisanship" and his mainly conservative voting record (Yahoo News).
Political experience: Bright was elected mayor of Montgomery in 1999 and was re-elected in 2003. Though he had previously not declared a party, he ran for Congress in the 2nd District of Alabama when long-term incumbent Terry Everett retired in 2008. Bright beat Republican State Rep. Jay Love by a narrow 1,766-vote margin. Bright is part of the Blue Dog Coalition and is considered one of the most conservative Democrats in the 111th Congress. Bright serves on the Armed Services, Agriculture and Small Business Committees (Yahoo News).
Professional experience: Bright practiced law for 15 years after graduating from The Thomas Goode Law School at Faulkner University (Yahoo News).

Most of the articles I read they understand what Bright is for but feel that he will not win or has a slim chance. Then on the other hand the articles were biased because they were more for Bobby because she supposedly is more towards fixing America. Bobby is receiving more coverage then Bright probably because she has to prove herself more than Bright does since he has had the job before. Then there are articles with both of them together but they are more for Bobby than Bright. I do not really understand why they are more for Bobby because when reading about them they both are practically the same just very few differences. I guess those small differences are causing the race to be so close.

Democrat: Health care- that is basic security for everyone, Education- no kid left behind, easier and less expensive, National Security- help the military
  • Alabama values have to deal with family, faith, and freedom as well as pro-life.
  • Armed Services will always be helped to stay the best an Bright will commit to ensure that the U.S. Armed Services will receive the equipment, weapons, training, and leadership that is needed to protect U.S. interests at home and defeat U.S. adversaries abroad.
  • Education will be improved by commonsense ways that facilitate change and improve the system by Bright committing to upholding the right of each child to receive a quality education, providing students with highly qualified teachers, access to essential learning tools within the classroom, and opportunities for higher education.
  • Fiscal Discipline needs to be dealt with by Bright committing to pass a balances budget and paying off the massive national debt, which will keep interest rates low and benefit the economy.
  • Health Care under Bright would be supported by tax credits to help employers to obtain health insurance for their employees and tax credits for individuals who purchase coverage on their own.
  • Second Amendment Rights will be recognized and oppose efforts to enact burdensome restrictions on the people rights to own and bear firearms.
  • Small Business are 70% of Alabama jobs and protect them when time are tough by Bright being committed to continue helping small business survive this economy in any capacity possible.

Martha Roby: She is a conservative Republican who is trying to be a candidate for Congress in Alabama’s second Congressional District. Her current job is the Montgomery City Council for Council District Seven. Bright is a native to Montgomery, Alabama. When she was first elected to the City Council in 2003 she had beaten the rest of the candidates without a runoff. Then she was reelected in 2007 and had over 82% of the vote. She was for not having tax increase and in 2008 tried to vote against proposed tax increases and offered solutions to reduce government spending. Then she was also for adopting an “ordinance to comply with federal law and prohibit business from harboring illegal aliens” (MarthaRoby). All of this resulted in local sales tax holiday and harder measures in Alabama’s landlord-tenant laws.

Martha Roby: Republican: National Defense- support a healthy defense, Health Care-Common Sense Reforms, Education- fix it

Key issues: According to her campaign website, Roby is in favor of health care savings accounts and the ability to purchase health insurance across state lines. She supports a balanced budget, tax simplification, securing America's borders and opposes amnesty for illegal aliens. She opposes estate taxes and supports bio fuels as a way to help the family farm. She is pro-veteran, pro-military, pro-gun, and supports local control of education (yahoo news).
Endorsements: No key endorsements so far (yahoo news).
Chances of unseating Bobby Bright: The main advantage that Roby has in the race against Bright is the R after her name. While they hold similar views on issues, the national tide in 2010 is trending against Democrats and toward Republicans. With an anti-incumbent mood, Roby's fresh face may propel her into national office. Roby can also paint Bright as "another vote for Pelosi" in this Republican-leaning district. Roby is using immigration as an issue against Bright, attacking his initial opposition to the Arizona illegal immigration law. On the minus side, Roby has no political experience aside from her city council races (yahoo news).
Political experience: Roby was elected to the Montgomery City Council in 2003. She was re-elected overwhelmingly in 2007.
Professional experience: Roby practiced law after graduating from the Cumberland School of Law at Samford University in 2001.

  • Health care reform that is affordable, portable and accessible health care is to empower people, not government.
  • A better way in reducing wasteful spending by resisting opening the federal wallet, and having balanced budget.
  • Retirement security that consists of not privatization of social security, no raising the age, not cutting benefits, and not increasing payroll taxes.
  • The tax reform is causing Americans to be "overtaxed and the burden the federal tax system places on families and businesses is unfair, requiring them to work harder for their money, yet taking home less and less of it in their paychecks" (Martha Roby). She is for lowering the tax and to "eliminate the current tax structure and reduce the federal bureaucracy needed to enforce the existing tax code by abolishing the IRS as we know it" (Martha Roby).
  • Taking better care for the veterans by assuring them the "highest quality medical care that is available, expand eligibility and improve the care that is provided to them" (Martha Roby).
  • Failure to protect the borders has caused a burden on American taxpayers and adopt an ordinance to comply with federal law and prohibit businesses from harboring illegal aliens as well as oppose any legislation offering amnesty or any pathway to citizenship for anyone who has disregarded our laws and opposes any legislation creating government benefits for illegal immigrants (Martha Roby).
  • Protect the family farms is the number one industry and Martha Roby is going to support developments of new markets for our agriculture products and will assure that they get a fair opportunity to compete in the global marketplace as well as getting rid of the “death tax” to allow the family farm to be passed on to the next generation without the threat of a massive tax penalty.
  • Preserving the values by voting in a conservative fiscal and social values that are Alabamians’ core beliefs and will always be there to defend the sanctity of life and protect the constitutional right to prayer (Martha Roby).
  • Protecting the 2nd Amendment by enforcing the right to bear arms in result of keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and severely increasing the punishment for anyone convicted of committing a crime with the use of a gun (Martha Roby).
  • Strengthening the military by making Congress to maintain a proper level of active duty forces so that these bright young men and women who protect and preserve our liberty, democracy, and freedoms and have the tools and training in order defend our nation and interests around the world (Martha Roby).
  • Education improvement by ensuring the quality in schools in result of Congress strengthening local control, cutting federal red tape and providing the authority and flexibility in spending federal education dollars to put more resources back into the classroom (Martha Roby).
